Building the Foundation of a Flourishing Relationship
An Appreciation of Three Decades of Marriage
by E.C.Martin, RGC
Yes. Three decades. Well, let me do the math - - 36 years as friends (plus 3 years as classmates; the first year is not included, disputable though), 30 years as married couple. Similar to other relationships, ours is also often tested by the trials of modern life - the realities of the world of the married. Our relationship is an ongoing journey to the enduring power of love, commitment, and friendship. Through the years, we have realized that lasting marriages are not merely built on grand gestures or fleeting emotions; rather, they are strengthened by a steadfast foundation grounded in values that sustain the bond between husband and wife. Fidelity, Respect, Intimacy, Effort, Nurturance, Discernment, and Spirituality collectively form the cornerstone of a thriving marital union, forming the acronym F.R.I.E.N.D.S.. We have explored these factors contributing to the longevity and vitality of our relationship as husband and wife. Let me share our appreciation and insights how we have reached this stage.
Fidelity:
At the heart of any thriving relationship, there's this unshakable loyalty that goes beyond just being physically faithful—it's about being emotionally committed. My husband and I value honesty, trust, and being open with each other. Yes, we have encountered a lot of challenges and mistakes along the way. Instead of keeping it to ourselves, we find ways and make time to talk through it. Some encounters were not smooth, some were highly emotional, our values of patience and self-control were greatly challenged. But with understanding, support, and open communication and the kind of transparency and trust we strive for in our marriage, we survive. It's not always easy, but it's worth it. It's about being genuine with each other, being willing to show our vulnerabilities. And even when we discover each other's weaknesses, we stick together, knowing that true loyalty means standing by each other through thick and thin.
We have realized that:
At the heart of a healthy marriage lies unwavering fidelity, extending beyond mere physical faithfulness to encompass emotional loyalty. Couples committed to fidelity prioritize transparency, trust, and open communication, reinforcing their bond against the temptations of infidelity.
Respect:
Respect is like the solid ground beneath our relationship, where mutual
admiration and understanding can truly blossom. It means deeply valuing
each other's viewpoints, personal space, and autonomy. My husband and I have found that in a relationship built on respect, we celebrate
our differences and handle disagreements with empathy and care. Of
course, we've had our fair share of rough patches—misunderstandings,
hurtful words, and emotional turmoil—but understanding each other's love
languages has been a game-changer for us. It's helped us navigate
through those tough times and come out even stronger on the other side.
We have realized that:
Respect forms the bedrock upon which mutual admiration and understanding flourish. It entails honoring each other's perspectives, boundaries, and autonomy. In a respectful relationship, differences are celebrated, and disagreements are approached with empathy and kindness.
Intimacy:
Intimacy is so much more than just physical closeness—it's about baring
our souls, sharing our hopes and fears, and truly connecting on a
profound level. My partner and I have always believed in prioritizing
intimacy in our relationship. We make a conscious effort to cultivate
emotional bonds, which has allowed us to build a deep connection that
endures through all the ups and downs. Sometimes, we'll just spend time
together without saying a word, simply holding each other's hands, and gazing into each other's eyes. In
those moments, we can almost sense each other's thoughts and feelings,
and it's incredibly powerful. It's those quiet, intimate moments that
truly strengthen our bond and bring us even closer together.
We have realized that:
Intimacy transcends mere physical connection; it involves emotional vulnerability, shared dreams, and genuine closeness. Couples who prioritize intimacy invest in nurturing emotional bonds, fostering deep connections that withstand the tests of time.
Effort:
In my experience, I've found that successful marriages are truly a team effort. It's about both partners putting in the work, from the little acts of love to the significant sacrifices we make for each other. It's this ongoing effort that keeps our relationship strong amidst life's challenges, through all of life's ups and downs. My husband and I are fully committed to this effort. We prioritize the growth and well-being of our partnership above all else. This means diving into tasks together, whether it's sharing household chores or caring for our aging parents as we navigate mid-life. We're always there for each other, running errands for relatives and living within our means, even exploring side hustles to provide for our family. And amidst the busyness of life, we make a conscious effort to stay connected and support each other and our loved ones. We make an effort to learn new words and phrases, expanding our communication skills and deepening our connection through meaningful conversations. This involves learning millenial languages--acronyms, new slang and abbreviations, reading books, watching podcasts and meaningful videos and movies and discussing interesting national and global issues. By staying curious and engaged in learning, we not only enrich our individual lives but also enhance our communication as a couple, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other's perspectives. Also, we're focused on maintaining a healthier lifestyle, both physically and mentally, which requires continuous effort and commitment, so we can age gracefully together. It's this shared efforts, big and small, that allows us to lead a fulfilling life together, and have our bond to grow even stronger, as we continue our life's journey.
We have realized that:Nurturance:
To me, nurturing means more than just saying "I love you"; it's about actively caring for and supporting each other through life's ebbs and flows. My partner and I strive to be deeply attuned to each other's needs, offering compassion and creating a safe space for vulnerability during difficult times. For example, when I was going through a tough period at work, my partner not only listened to my concerns but also took on extra household tasks to alleviate my stress. It's these everyday actions that truly demonstrate our love and strengthen our bond in a nurturing relationship.
We have realized that:
Nurturance embodies the act of caring for and supporting one another through life's challenges. It involves being attuned to each other's needs, offering compassion, and providing a safe haven in times of distress. In a nurturing relationship, love is not merely spoken but demonstrated through actions.
Discernment:
For me, discernment in a relationship, is like a compass that helps navigate the complexities of life with my spouse. It's about making thoughtful choices that prioritize our long-term happiness and harmony over immediate satisfaction. For instance, when we were faced with major decisions about our lifestyle and careers, we took the time to carefully weigh the pros and cons, considering the most cost-effective ways and how it would impact our family and our future together. By practicing discernment, we've learned to approach challenges with clarity and wisdom, which has only deepened our connection and strengthened our marriage over time.
We have realized that:
Discernment fosters wisdom and understanding, guiding couples through life's complexities. It involves making thoughtful decisions, prioritizing long-term harmony over short-term gratification. Couples who practice discernment approach challenges with clarity and wisdom, strengthening their marital bond.
Spirituality:
Spirituality adds depth and significance to the journey my husband and I share. It goes beyond the ordinary aspects of life to embrace the sacred, weaving together our shared values, practices, and a profound connection to something greater than ourselves. This spiritual bond provides us with solace during difficult times, inspires us to be our best selves, and gives us the resilience to weather life's challenges with grace, faith, hope and love. In addition, being grateful to God for His blessings and actively
participating in the community of believers by fulfilling one's
responsibilities are central aspects of our Christian faith and practice
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." 2 Peter 1:5-7 from the New International Version
We have realized that:
Spirituality infuses meaning and purpose into the marital journey, transcending the ephemeral to embrace the eternal. It encompasses shared values, practices, acts of kindness and a sense of connection to something greater than oneself. Couples who nurture their spiritual bond find peace, inspiration, and resilience in their faith.
In conclusion, cultivating a lasting and healthy husband and wife relationship requires intentional investment in the pillars of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.: Fidelity, Respect, Intimacy, Effort, Nurturance, Discernment, and Spirituality. By prioritizing these values, couples can build a partnership grounded in love, mutual respect, and enduring friendship, enriching their lives and inspiring others along the way.
